Miles Without Stiles
Level of Investment:£10,000 - £100,000 (bespoke investment packages)
Project Description
Miles Without Stiles makes the Lake District accessible to all, offering a network of well-surfaced routes free of stiles, steps, and steep gradients. This ensures that wheelchair users, families with pushchairs, dog walkers, and less agile walkers can all enjoy this iconic landscape.
Inclusive access allows everyone to reap the mental, physical, and social benefits of the outdoors, fostering a deeper connection to the environment and supporting biodiversity initiatives.
Why is it needed?
The Lake District UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its natural beauty. However, it is a challenging landscape for people with reduced mobility. Rough ground, gates, stiles, and undefined paths make it impossible for many to experience the National Park’s diverse landscapes, culture, and habitats.
Environmental outcomes

Social outcomes
A more inclusive national park
Healthier communities
More connection to the environment
Why invest?
Investing in new Miles without Stiles routes and renewing existing routes will help make the Lake District the UK’s most accessible national park.
Investment in Mile without Stiles supports social and environmental goals. It promotes social inclusion and ensures everyone has access to the benefits of outdoor recreation and nature. By providing opportunities for outdoor physical activity, relaxation, and social interaction, the project supports community well-being and fosters enhanced connections to the environment.
