Project Summary
Ghost Woodlands are ecologically and culturally significant native woodland sites that have lost much or all of their tree cover but have the potential to be restored to flourishing woodland ecosystems.
The remaining fragments of these woodlands enable their restoration.
New ‘nearly’ woodlands will be identified, and skilled local foresters will support their owners in restoring them into fully functioning woodland ecosystems.
Investment is needed to revive ancient woodlands and restore their valuable habitats, which are rich in biodiversity. By reviving these ecosystems, we can also sequester carbon and preserve our natural heritage.
Without this essential investment, the ghost woodlands of the Lake District could be lost forever.
Project Context
These Ghost Woodlands are vital. Their soils hold remnants of past woodlands that can come back to life, seeds and spores that can’t be replicated in new woodlands.
By connecting and buffering existing woodlands, we protect, grow, and maximise their wildlife and landscape value, as well as that of our UNESCO World Heritage Site.
