Project Summary
Cumbrian fell ponies, a vital part of the Lake District’s cultural heritage for over a millennium, are now at a critical juncture. With only 180 breeding mares remaining in Cumbria, the threat of losing this iconic native breed looms large.
This project will provide upland grazing land with hill grazing rights for Fell Ponies. The ongoing vision is to have a Fell Pony Heritage Centre for visitors as part of a Heritage farming project in the Lake District.
Context
Fell ponies are not only culturally significant but also vital for protecting the landscape’s biodiversity.
Their unique grazing habits, eating on the move and dispersing seeds, create an ideal environment for flora and fauna to thrive. They are a living testament to the delicate balance of our ecosystem.
